The Edible Schoolyard New York is now accepting applications for a Garden Manager and Teacher and an Office Administrator

GARDEN MANAGER AND TEACHER
Edible Schoolyard New York is hiring a full-time, year-round Garden Manager & Teacher to create a quarter-acre organic garden at a Brooklyn public school and maintain the garden as an extraordinary learning space for K-5 students. As a member of ESYNY’s start-up team, the Garden Manager & Teacher will help shape a program that will benefit children throughout New York City.

The successful candidate will be an experienced gardener trained in the development and maintenance of organic gardens and greenhouse collections, including planting, cultivating, propagating, watering, fertilizing, pruning, mulching, and organic pest and weed control. S/he will also be an experienced teacher of elementary school-aged children, with demonstrated capacity to develop lesson plans and teach hands-on garden based classes to young students.

The Garden Manager & Teacher will train and supervise volunteers, engage community members and volunteers in garden activities, and work with school and ESYNY staff on garden-based programs for students and the community.

The Garden Manager & Teacher will represent ESYNY at speaking engagements, workshops and conferences. The position involves hard physical labor throughout the calendar year and occasional weekend work hours.

Requirements:
Passion for organic gardening, teaching and desire to create gardens that will promote learning and produce organic food for use in kitchen classroom activities.
Bachelor’s degree in education, horticulture, environmental science or related field required.
Minimum three years experience of sound horticultural practice, preferably in an urban setting.
Curriculum development experience preferred.
A valid driver’s license and clean driving record.

Wages: Commensurate with experience

OFFICE ADMINSTRATOR
Edible Schoolyard New York is hiring a full-time Office Administrator to manage all administrative aspects of its work, based in an office at PS 216 in Gravesend, Brooklyn. The Office Administrator will establish a fully functioning office, maintain ESYNY’s contact resource management system and help oversee construction of the ESYNY garden and kitchen classrooms. The Office Administrator will provide critical support to the Executive Director’s work with the board, raising funds, conducting school outreach and responding to many and varied inquiries. As a member of ESYNY’s start-up team, the Office Administrator will help shape a growing program that will benefit children throughout New York City.

The successful candidate will have professional office experience in a fast-paced setting, preferably school based. S/he will have strong working knowledge of Wordpress and Microsoft Office software and the ability to provide computer tech support. S/he will have excellent oral and written communication skills and the demonstrated ability to create and maintain well-organized office spaces and systems. S/he will be organized and a motivated self-started with the ability to work cooperatively in a team.

Requirements:
Bachelor’s degree in education, English, psychology or a related field.
Minimum three years experience working in or managing a professional office.
Ability to work with frequent interruption and to simultaneously supervise a variety of tasks.
A valid driver’s license and clean driving record.
Some weekend work is required.

Wages: Commensurate with experience
